Some rules we wrote
for ourselves.
A food tracker can quietly become an anxious tracker. Worry about a streak, a deficit, a number on the scale that flickered upward overnight. We've all seen it. So before we built Meelo we wrote down six things we'd never do. This page is that list.
A tracker that knows when not to track.
We designed ED-aware mode with eating-disorder clinicians in the room. Flip it on and the numbers disappear. Calories, weight, food ratings, all gone. Plant variety becomes the headline. It's optional, off by default, and one tap to toggle either direction.
Calorie-counting apps can be helpful tools. They can also be harmful ones. The same dashboard that motivates a marathon runner can spiral a teenager.
So we built a second mode. Not a "lite" version. Not a hidden setting. A first-class experience that the app falls back to with no loss of usefulness.
You can switch into ED-aware mode at any time, for any reason. There is no streak you'll break, no progress you'll lose. Your data is yours; you choose what to see.
We never use words like "cheat", "bad", or "guilty", not in the UI, not in the notifications, not anywhere.
The six rules.
If we ever break one of these, hold us to it.
No shame language.
We never use "cheat", "bad", "guilty", "ruined", or "wasted". Notifications are reminders, not nudges. Going over a target is data, not a moral event.
Hide anything you don't want to see.
Calories, weight, body fat, ratings. All toggleable per-screen. The app keeps working with all of them off. If you want plants and water as the only numbers on your dashboard, that's a one-tap setting.
Your data is yours.
Export everything you've logged at any time. PDF, CSV, plain text. Take it to your dietitian, to a competitor, to a spreadsheet. There will never be a fee for getting your own data out.
Cancel in one tap.
No "are you sure?" funnel. No retention emails. No support-email gauntlet to escape a subscription. Tap once inside the app and you're out.
We don't sell your data.
No analytics SDKs that ship your meal log to advertisers. No "anonymised" partnerships. Subscriptions are the entire business model. There's no second one hiding behind it.
The free tier stays free.
What's free today will be free tomorrow. We won't quietly move barcode scanning, manual logging, exercise logging, step goals or exports behind the paywall. New AI features may be Pro; the basics never will be.
